Bob Ryan began his career working with individuals with disabilities at Threshold Inc., a residential treatment facility for children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities, located in Orlando Florida. He worked there for 3 years and acquired the Florida CBA(p) (now the BCABA).
He then became a Teacher for Magnolia school, a center based school in Orange County Florida. There he worked for 4 years teaching children with disabilities. During this time, he became the Department Head for the Secondary II Teaching Team. This teaching team consisted of a group of teachers that taught children diagnosed with developmental disabilities, Autism, and Behavior concerns. The focus of teaching was on behavior reduction, functional communication training, and daily living skills.
He then became a School Based Behavior Specialist at Osceola High School working primarily with the Emotionally Handicapped population and as time permitted with children with Autism and children with developmental disabilities. Teaching emphasis was on individual and classroom behavior management systems, academic areas such as reading and math, and advocating for students with disabilities being included in the general school population.
He was only there for a short period when he was called upon to become one of two District Level Behavior Analysts for Osceola County Public Schools supervised by Dr. Carbone. Emphasis was on consultation with teachers for individual students; consultations with administrators for teachers and students; and School wide and District training in Applied Behavior Analysis.
From Osceola County Schools, he moved to St Lucie County Schools as a District Behavior Analyst spending time at Dale Cassens Center School developing school-wide plans for targeting behavior issues and individual student plans. After this assignment, he began assisting other schools in the District develop programs to be in compliance with the reauthorization of I.D.E.A. of 1997, and it's targeting of Behavior Support Plans. The Behavior Department of St. Lucie hired assistants and assigned them to the Behavior Department as Behavior Technicians. Mr. Ryan assisted with their assignments and training. Also during his time in St. Lucie, he conducted the preparatory courses for individuals who were interested in becoming Certified Behavior Analysts in Florida.
While working in St. Lucie County, he was approached by a group of parents form the Jericho School for Children with Autism in Jacksonville Florida, and became their Education/Training Director where he has been for the last 4 years. During this time, he helped the school adopt a Verbal Behavior approach to teaching and developed all programs for children with disabilities based upon Verbal Behavior. He has taught the preparatory classes to become a CBA, he has conducted numerous parent trainings. He has sat on the Duval County Schools Focus Group on Autism, worked on transition plans from the Jericho School to other private or public schools, and has taught many teachers how to implement and teach programs that are based on Verbal Behavior.
Mr. Ryan is now the President of Behavior and Communication Therapy Inc. This company provides trainings and services in the areas of Behavior Analysis and Verbal Behavior. This company serves children and adults with Developmental Disabilities including Autism and their families and caregivers and works with Public and Private schools and Organizations in many areas of the U.S. and Canada.
